When I first read the title of the short story I chose to
analyze I automatically assumed it was merely a short story about people things
carry. I thought to myself this story cannot just be all about things people
carry. This title made me laugh. I then read the story and sure it literally is
about things people carry but it goes beyond that, it has a deeper meaning than
just object people may be carrying around with them. As they say don't judge a
book by its cover, well you also shouldn't judge a shorty story by its title.
Yes,the soldiers do carry objects with them but each object is seen as a symbol
and has a meaning behind why each person carries it with them. These objects
they carry not only have a physical meaning behind them as to protect them
because the things they carry also refers to the emotional baggage they carry
as well. The feelings they have, the worries, and the suffering they've been
through.
These soldiers carry the things the military demanded they carry. The first lieutenant Jim carried a compass, binoculars, maps, code books, and a pistol. As a first lieutenant he needs to carry these items in order to serve as a leader and to protect himself and his fellow soldiers. Henry Dobbins was a big man this is a reason he carried fifteen pounds of ammo. He was physically able to carry such a load across his chest because he was such a big man. As a medic, Rat Riley carried morphine, malaria tablets and comic books. These comic books may have been a way for him to escape his reality for the time being. After all he was responsible for carrying all the past vivid images of soldiers wounds and mutations in his mind, so I would think. He carried medicine such as morphine to give to soldiers in order to help with their pain.
In daydreams Jimmy Cross would daydream about his love Martha, and how when he was with her only inside his utmost deep and wildest thoughts was he with her in the sands not having to worry about carrying anything. This was his only moment he was able to escape reality where he was not responsible for carrying anything. In his real world he had to carry things every single day. He carried: can openers, knives, wrist watches, candy, gum, guns and many more items as the list would continue from the most basic necessities to the things they needed in order to safe from others. The point being is that he carried all these objects for necessity. When Lavender died, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross was thinking about Martha and how much he loved her more than any of his men. Other soldier died and the remaining soldiers now carried their own ghosts with them, this may have felt like a heavier burden then the physical objects.
